Update Goal Progress: Increment vs. Total

Understanding the difference between updating goal process with an increment or a new total.

Written by Adam

When updating goal progress, employees can choose to update by increment or by total.

Updating by increment adds or subtracts the amount entered from the current progress. Updating by total replaces the current progress with the amount entered.

Example

The following example walks through the options for goal progress if you decide to update incrementally OR by total.

Goal: Hire 7 people for the people team. Start: 0. Target: 7.

Month 1: Made 1 hire.

  • Increment: 1 hire

  • Total: 1 hire

New goal progress: 1.

Month 2: Made 3 hires.

  • Increment: 3 hires

  • Total: 4

New goal progress: 4
